How we help high streets
Find out about the Task Force's approach and the range of support it offers to high streets and local leaders.
The High Streets Task Force provides support to local leaders in town centres and high streets in England. Funded by government, this support includes expert advice, training, and data delivered directly to local stakeholders in towns and cities, and a range of resources online that are available to all.
Our aim is to support place leaders to make the best decisions on the future of their high streets and how they best serve their communities, and to build long-term capacity for this local transformation. We have a vision for town centres and high streets as the heart of their communities, with a unique sense of place and a strong identity.
Whilst expert advice can help to solve some complex and technical problems facing high streets; the vision and capacity for change is generated from local leaders, businesses, people and organisations that care about their location. That’s why we work to develop sustainable place making skills across a range of local stakeholders.
On this page you can find out more about how we offer support.

Support for selected local authorities
The High Streets Task Force will support over 150 local authorities, working closely with place leaders and other stakeholders during its programme of support, which runs to 2024. These areas face specific challenges of deprivation or inequality and will receive direct support from Task Force Experts to help transform their high streets.
In March 2021, we announced the first 70 local authorities to receive direct support.
All selected local authorities are contacted by the Task Force and will receive an induction pack detailing the support available and what you can expect.
Unlocking place potential
Selected locations will work with Task Force Experts who will consult with local leaders from government, business and the community to diagnose the issues blocking transformation and to recommend ways to make positive change.
Based on this initial consultation, locations will receive a range of tailored support services offered by the Task Force, including targeted expert consultancy, mentoring, access to local footfall data, and training programmes for place managers and leaders.
This support will both help to revitalise specific high streets across England and raise the capacity of local place leaders and organisations to deliver similar transformations across their local authority.
