The short guide from the Urban Design Group sets out a clear list of options for high streets in addressing COVID-19 and making places liveable.

Through the lens of new statutory advice and duties for local authorities, this includes looking at four immediate areas of focus:

  • Space for life
focused on traffic management and reduction initiatives, as well as changes to space for pedestrians.

  • Space for movement
focused on safe walking and cycling routes to incorporate local retail and essential services, and including spaces to exercise.

  • Space for children, elderly and disabled people
focused on protecting the elderly, and safe areas for children to play including more broadly child-safe neighbourhoods.

The guide then helpfully details more specific measures that link with these priority areas, looking at tactical initiatives around traffic, walking and cycling.

For place leaders wanting to consider the broad direction of their travel, cycling and walking strategies, this short document is a useful starting point – including links to relevant regulations.
