This 48 minute webinar features three distinguished keynote speakers, Nancy Duxbury (University of Coimbra, Portugal), Greg Richards (Tilburg University and Breda University of Applied Sciences, The Netherlands) and Diana Zulaga (5Bogota: Travel with Locals, Colombia), and was moderated by Kathleen Scherf (Thompson Rivers University, Canada). The webinar is freely accessible and should be of interest to anyone who wants to hear more about post-COVID discussions on the future of creative tourism.

The webinar was initiated as a means of connecting anyone around the world who is interested and involved with “community based cultural and creative tourism” in a global conversation.

This webinar is introduced by Nancy Duxbury and is held under the umbrella of the CREATOUR International creative tourism initiative that links culture, tourism, and local development in Portugal. Her introduction focused on the CREATOUR project as a means of generating “place-specific and inclusive local development strategies and actions”, and networking with colleagues around the world in order that they may learn from each other.

Kathleen Scherf then introduced herself as moderator for the remainder of the webinar, introducing the key guest speakers.

Greg Richards’s presentation focused on sharing a big picture perspective on creative tourism looking back on how it started and where he thinks creative tourism is going – whether creative tourism is seen as an extension of cultural tourism or as a reaction to it. Creative tourism should focus on both its production as well as its consumption. With reference to the current COVID-19 pandemic along with other disasters, he reminded the audience that recovery in such circumstances is often based on creative approaches to place-making, and also a need for networking – bringing people together particularly at cultural events. His conclusion is that “local creative resources can provide new engaging experiences for visitors, but they also support new creative possibilities for local people” too, although the current pandemic is forcing us to limit the physical encounters between hosts and visitors, and between visitors themselves.

Diana Zulaga then presented her experiences of developing creative tourism initiatives in Bogota, Columbia, and where the focus is now in attempting to move into the recovery phase post COVID-19. Her focus was on the need for continual new product development, on different means of keeping connected with tourists, and on treating local domestic travellers as creative tourists when foreign travel has been affected so badly.
