Repositioning: developing collaborative, inspiring visions that achieve change (3/5)

Learning materials from webinar 3 in our Transformation Routemap series - providing advice on creating an effective high street vision that brings about change.

This webinar took place on 03 July. View the recording and related learning materials below.

This third webinar in the Transformation Routemap series helps place leaders to consider their local vision, how this can be formed most effectively, and how it can impact the transformation of high streets.

Providing advice on this topic is Bill Grimsey, outlining his vision for high streets post-COVID-19, driven by localism, strong leadership and sustainability at the heart of place. The webinar also includes two excellent examples of local visions, from Alan Anthony of Threesixty Architecture, who presents a blueprint for developing inclusive visions drawing on his experience in Paisley, and Hayley Owen from Shropshire Council to share the development of the Big Town Plan in Shrewsbury

The webinar covered:

  • The myriad forces that are impacting high streets and town centres, including COVID-19
  • The importance of data and evidence in making plans and strategies that solve problems

  • The importance of the visioning process

  • How to develop visions and strategies in a collaborative fashion that develop collective ambition for genuine transformation

Learning materials

Following the webinar, place leaders are directed to the following activity to support them in considering their own local vision or visions, and whether these require any development in light of COVID-19 and its impact on high streets.

  1. Critically evaluate your current vision (download the pdf activity)
This exercise allows you to undertake a critical evaluation on your current vision in light of COVID-19, including how it may need to change, considering a number of key questions.

  2. Read 'A Vision for High Street Regeneration' (view the report)
This report includes much of the material and plans that our third speaker, Alan Anthony, discussed with particular reference to the vision for Paisley. It is an excellent document, published as guidance in Scotland but relevant for all with an interest in place and high streets.

  3. Explore the Shrewsbury Big Town Plan (view the plan)
Another fantastic example of creating and enacting a local vision - Hayley Owen spoke about this Big Town Plan on the webinar and you can find more details by visiting its website. This includes featured projects and much of the outline that Hayley discussed.
